Coming Soon – Asian American Challenges Toward Racial Justice

Asian American Challenges Toward Racial Justice is a two day workshop for people who are a part of, live in, or work with Asian American communities and who are invested in eliminating racism and racial inequities in our society. Using a race analysis, this workshop unpacks how racism uniquely disempowers Asian Americans, undermines cross-racial solidarity, and keeps a structural arrangement of power in place. Over the two days, participants will also explore the social, political, cultural, and economic ramifications resulting from geopolitical histories and realities and from the way Asian Americans have been racialized that shape Asian American identity and outcomes today.

Asian American Challenges Toward Racial Justice can serve as a complement to existing workshops that ground people in understanding racism as historically and structurally rooted such as the Racial Equity Institute’s Phase I workshop or as an entry point for Asian Americans to understand how racism impacts their communities.

Measuring Racial Equity: Asian Americans

Measuring Racial Equity: Asian Americans is a three hour presentation for people who are a part of, live in, or work with Asian American communities and who are interested in eliminating racism and racial inequities in our society. Using data and research, this presentation reveals the often overlooked impacts of racism on Asian Americans communities by using the following approaches:

  • Disparities within the Asian American community and across other racial groups can be revealed by disaggregating outcomes of well-being based on ethnicity and many other factors across indicators of income, poverty, health, housing, and more.

  • When matched along similar profiles and qualifications, Asian Americans appear to experience relative disadvantages compared to White Americans—similarly and differently from other communities of color.

  • During/after major events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, Asian Americans can be met with negative outcomes and increased vulnerability during turbulent periods–similarly and differently to other communities of color.

Measuring Racial Equity: Asian Americans can serve as a complement to existing presentations that ground people in understanding racism as historically and structurally rooted such as the Racial Equity Institute’s Groundwater presentation or as an entry point for Asian Americans to understand how racism impacts their communities.

Internalized Racism: Asian Americans

A storytelling experience and space for Asian Americans to reflect on the unique ways that our communities have internalized our cumulative experiences in a society structured by race and its impact on organizing. This offering is recommended for Asian Americans who have experience with structural approaches to understanding and organizing against racism and who have engaged with workshops such as the Asian American Challenges Toward Racial Justice two day workshop or the Racial Equity Institute’s two day Phase I workshop.
